Stockholm Syndrome
causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the danger and/or risk endured by the victims.
One bail condition was a ‘hold departure’ order. Thus I was stuck in Manila without being able to work. My hotel room was emptied of my clothes, passport and camera. My partner of 18 years came to my rescue helping me set up. Unknown to me at that time, that this had ruptured his life narrative. All his crises revolved around health. Law was new territory. These photographs were made he was falling into a hell of his own which ended in his death.
In my safe house, I was told not to go out nor did I feel comfortable exploring. For the first 4 months all I had to photograph with was my phone. This was my only communications device. I could not afford to lose it. At first I did little traveling. Over the time I met some kind people who took me out and protected me. I was determined to build my confidence back up. This project was the first step.
These are observations in the tradition of street photography, they about me trying to explain what happened, my emotions and how to come back from trauma.
