male//chair

All portraits are collaborations.

I did a research degree on masculinity. I’m very interested in how males present themselves.

In 2000 i did a project toHave & toHold which I offered males four poses while on a pedestal with a prop if they so desired.

This project is similar. The frame this time is being naked with a chair. This sitter is in control of the pose, he presents himself how he wishes to present to the world, his confidence, swagger, coyness and even shame. Each is congratulated for accepting the challenge. The body language and how much they show speaks to societal norms and the tension with rebellion. I take the position that anyone who was willing to pose, and we can make a time, is photographed. In each I work at the lighting to make each male to make a stunning photo in the poses they choose.

We shoot on digital, but also the best poses i shoot on film as well for some fun.

This project is on display at the Victorian Pride Centre.
